Incredible groove recorded in one take
This superb fusion album was recorded using a direct cutting method that does not allow editing, exposing even the breath of the performers.
With no editing or alterations permitted, Herbie Hancock's creativity ignites sharply. The layered synths of the opening track "Butterfly" and Benny Maupin's lyrical soprano loom high in resolution. Driven by Paul Jackson's powerful bass and Alphonse Mousone's dynamic drums, the album is driven by cutting-edge sound-making, including the extended version of "I Thought It Was You," which makes extensive use of the vocoder, and conveys a forward-thinking approach that stood out even in the fusion scene of the time.
