This work is considered a masterpiece from the period when the artist established his own unique style of "chamber music-like jazz."
This is one of the MJQ's signature works, blending John Lewis's sophisticated compositional beauty with Milt Jackson's bluesy sensibility. It is also known as a monumental work as it marked the first time that the "unwavering lineup" that would last for nearly 40 years came together, with drummer Kenny Clarke being replaced by Connie Kay.
