This is the debut album by The Rentals, a band led by Matt Sharp, also known as the bassist for Weezer.
Their sound, which boldly incorporated synthesizers, and songwriting that combined humor and melancholy, brought a breath of fresh air to the guitar-driven rock scene of the time.
The male-female twin vocal interplay is also impressive, with a perfect balance of cuteness and twisted emotional expression. Beneath the light tempo and pop surface lies a somewhat unstable and earnest feeling that makes this album more than just power pop.
