オープニングから漂う緊張感と重厚なブラスの響きが、このアルバムの異色性を象徴する。Jim Morrison のヴォーカルは朗読的な抑揚とロックの力強さを兼ね備え、バンドの演奏はリズムと旋律の狭間で自在に揺れる。「Touch Me」ではジャズ的な管楽器がポップな光を放ち、「The Soft Parade」では詩的構成が展開を劇化する。サウンド全体にはクラシックの構築美とロックの荒々しさが同居し、60年代末の音楽的転換点を体現。実験精神と表現の広がりが同居した、ドアーズの創造力を象徴する一枚である。
