A New Orleans master takes on AOR and disco
This album was released by New Orleans R&B heavyweight Allen Toussaint during his time with Warner Bros. This ambitious work goes a step beyond his traditional funk sound, incorporating elements of disco and AOR of the time.
While Toussaint's distinctive piano touch and relaxed vocals remain, the sound is more refined, with extensive use of strings and synthesizers. Horn sections arranged by Jerry Hey add a touch of glamour to the funky songs. Meanwhile, the second-line rhythms characteristic of New Orleans have receded, replaced by more straightforward dance beats. This is a work in which Toussaint's musical exploration intersects with the sounds of the era.
