A look at evolution through unreleased takes
This reconstructed recording covers a period of approximately 18 months, from the golden quintet period to the experimental arrangement, and shows the transition centered on Wayne Shorter's songs.
The sharp trumpet builds tension, and the tight ensemble of the second-period quintet produces a multi-layered sound. Centered around Wayne Shorter's compositions, Herbie Hancock's keyboards and Tony Williams' drumming intertwine at a high level. Lyricism and free improvisation coexist in "Water Babies," and the introduction of electric piano on side B reveals a exploration that would lead to "In A Silent Way." This is an important work that transcends the scope of unreleased material.
