This classic album, packed with mellow jazz and soul, including the killer soul track "Morning Sunrise," sampled by Jay-Z, Drake, and others, is being reissued on CD for the first time in theThis 1998 release features sessions from the late 1970s onwards by Weldon Irvin with Don Blackman and a young Marcus Miller. In the late 1970s, Weldon Irvin was releasing a string of rare groove classics, including "Spirit Man" (1975), released on RCA Victor, and "Sinbad" (1976), which featured the signature song "I Love You." This 1998 album truly deserves to be called rare groove, and compiles recordings he made at the time with fellow collaborators Don Blackman and a young Marcus Miller, but which had not seen the light of day for a long time. This album features a wealth of tracks that rival the band's many classics, including the superb mellow soul track "Morning Sunrise" (M5), featuring Don Blackman's soft vocals, a track that has been sampled by Jay-Z and Drake. The album also includes the jazz-funk track "The Sisters" (M1), featuring Marcus Miller's groovy bass and Tom Browne's sharp trumpet phrasing. The album also includes the mellow fusion track "Heard It All Before" (M10), with its sophisticated melody and urban feel. Finally, the superb funky track "Think I'll Stay A While" (M3), featuring the positive and powerful vocals of Toni Smith, best known for her contributions to Tom Browne's signature New York funk classic "Funkin' for Jamaica," is also included. This is the world's first reissue in CD format! |
