This is a 1965 recording of Maurice Ravel's masterpiece, Daphnis and Chloe, by conductor Ernest Ansermet, renowned as an ideal interpreter of modern French music.
Like Stravinsky and Debussy, Ensourme demonstrated a balance of objectivity and poetry in his interpretation of Ravel, respecting the composer's intentions.
This is Ravel's largest orchestral work, and a ballet piece that could be described as the pinnacle of impressionistic orchestration. This recording highlights the clear and taut structure that only an ensemble can achieve. Without leaning too heavily towards romanticism, the transparent interplay of each voice is carefully portrayed, and layers of sound are meticulously layered.
