A classmate from elementary school became an idol-like celebrity and took the UK by storm.
Their first album was released in 1983. With the success of pre-release singles such as "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)", "Young Guns (Go for It)" and "Bad Boys", they became the fourth band in history to debut at number one in the UK, instantly becoming a top star. They also made their US debut at the same time, but although it charted on the Billboard charts, it was not a hit.
The music was handled by George Michael, and the stage and visual aspects were handled by Andrew Ridgeley. The combination of their pop music and the handsomeness of the two men earned them idol-like popularity in Japan.
