Richard Strauss's depictions of transformation and sublimation
A recording of Strauss's late masterpieces conducted by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
"Metamorphosen" intertwines the tragedy of war with a prayer for art, while "Death and Metamorphosis" depicts the end of life and the sublimation of the spirit. Karajan's deep empathy and the beautiful sound of the Berlin Philharmonic beautifully express Strauss's state of mind in his later years. This recording still shines as a masterpiece of 20th-century orchestral works.
