「アルプス交響曲」では山岳風景を音楽で描写し、オーケストラの全楽器が雄大な自然を表現する。ケンペの指揮はドラマティックでありながら繊細で、ロイヤル・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の演奏は圧巻。後期ロマン派管弦楽曲の頂点を示す名演だ。
