Jamaican Sessions: The intersection of ska and samba
Set against the backdrop of ska/jazz, this work incorporates a Jamaican session feel and depicts a mixture of passion and restraint.
On side A, the arrangement blends the bounce of ska with the pulse of samba, creating a pleasant, swaying sound, while brass and guitar phrasing add a dynamic dynamic. Side B is based on a more subdued tone, with a restrained soul/reggae feel, and throughout it you can see glimpses of the improvisational quality of a session. The two sides resonate with each other, and the structure in which rhythm and melody mutually support each other is impressive.
